Keyword : Characteristics of Midwives’ Action in Preventing Complication of Pregnancy

AKI (maternity death rate) and prenatal in Indonesia are high; therefore, midwifery service is urgently needed. According to the data from the Health Service of Toba Samosir District in 2011, there were 2/100,000 newborn babies at Lumban Julu Subdistrict. The type of the research was descriptive analytic with total sampling technique. The research was performed at Lumban Julu Subdistrict in March, 2012. The samples comprised 32 midwives, using questionnaires. The primary data were gathered from the questionnaires and the secondary data were gathered from the Health Service of Toba Samosir District.


The result of the statistical test, using chi square with <α = 0.05 showed that the variable of knowledge had correlation with the action of midwives in preventing complication of pregnancy with the value of p 0.022 <α = 0.005, age had correlation with the action of midwives in preventing complication of pregnancy with the value p 0.000 <α = 0.005, length of service had correlation with the action of midwives in preventing complication of pregnancy with the value p 0.028 <α = 0.005, and education had correlation with the action of midwives in preventing complication of pregnancy with the value p 0.003 <α = 0.005.


The conclusion of the research was that knowledge, age, length of service, and education had correlation with the action of midwives in preventing complication of pregnancy. It is recommended that midwives should participate in trainings in order to increase their skills and knowledge.
